Hallus valgus and hammer toe correction

Patient of Mr Tony Wilkinson: This 64-year-old female suffered from a common foot condition known as hallux valgus and hammer toe. Hallux valgus otherwise known as a bunion affects the big toe whilst hammer toe affects the lesser toes (usually the 2nd).

The operation involved cutting the first metatarsal and realigning the big toe joint before fixing the bone with screws. The second toe was fused at the middle joint and fixed with a tiny implant. The screws and the implant remain in place forever.

Recovery takes around 6 weeks (first 2weeks in a post-operative shoe then 4 weeks in a lace-up shoe). The patient could weight bear straight away.
