Knee Arthritis

Knee arthritis – arthritis is a general term that refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and inflammation of the joint.

The most common type of arthritis affecting the knee is osteoarthritis (OA), commonly known as “wear and tear” arthritis. In this condition the cartilage covering the ends of the femur and tibia (known as articular cartilage) wear away, leaving the bone ends to rub against each other causing pain.

The next most common type of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissue, causing damage to the cartilage, ligaments and bone.
