Osteonecrosis

Osteonecrosis – a relatively common cause of knee pain in older women is osteonecrosis. This is when a segment of bone dies as a result of inadequate blood supply. Osteonecrosis of the knee is most commonly seen in the medial femoral condyle but can also occur in the lateral femoral condyle or tibial joint surface, otherwise known as the tibial plateau.

Treatment Options

The treatment of osteonecrosis depends on the degree of necrosis and ranges from non-surgical management with pain relief and non-weight bearing to knee replacement.
