Prominent Ear Correction (Pinnaplasty)

Prominent Ear Correction (Pinnaplasty)

Also known as otoplasty and cosmetic ear surgery, pinnaplasty is a procedure to modify the shape, size, or position of the ears. Most people opt for pinnaplasty because they are bothered by how far their ears stick out from the head. Some people also consider this procedure in case their ear or ears are amputated/misshapen due to a congenital disability or an injury.

Pinnaplasty can be done after the ears have reached their full size. Most plastic surgeons are willing to do it after age 10. In some cases, it can be done as early as age five.

If a child is born with certain ear-shape problems such as prominent ears, pinnaplasty may successfully treat these issues and help restore a patient’s confidence.

Why it’s done

Pinnaplasty can be the best option for you if:

  • Your one or both ears are large in proportion to your head
  • Your ears stick out too far from your head
  • You are dissatisfied with a previous surgical intervention to your ear

To optimize symmetry, otoplasty is typically done on both ears. It won’t alter your ability to hear or change the location of your ears.

How it’s done?

Pinnaplasty can be done in an outpatient surgical facility or a hospital. The procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia, which numbs only part of your body, i.e., ears in this case. In other cases, general anaesthesia is given before the procedure which renders you unconscious.

Pinnaplasty techniques vary based on factors such as the shape of the nose, what kind of correction is required, and the desired outcome. The specific technique chosen by your plastic surgeon will determine the incision location and the resulting scars. Two common types of incisions pinnaplasty involve include;

  • Within the inner creases of ears
  • On the backs of ears

After making small incisions, your surgeon might remove excess tissue (skin and cartilage). The cartilage is then folded into the proper position and secured with internal stitches. The procedure may take 2-3 hours.

For protection and support, your ears will be covered in bandages after the procedure. Your doctor will remove your bandages a few days after otoplasty. You will later discharge the same or a day after the surgery.

How effective pinnaplasty is?

An immediate change is evident in the appearance of your ears right after the procedure. In most cases, these changes are permanent. In general, pinnaplasty is safe and most plastic surgeons and people are satisfied with the results.
