Rhinoplasty is a surgery done to modify the shape of the nose. For most people, the motivation for rhinoplasty or nose job may be to improve breathing or change the appearance of the nose, or both.

The upper one-third portion of the nose structure is bone, and the lower two-third portion is cartilage. A nose job can change the structure of the bone, cartilage, skin, or all three.

When planning nose job, your surgeon will consider several factors such as your facial features, any nose deformity, the skin on your nose, nose diseases and conditions, and what you would like to change. Your plastic surgeon will develop a specific plan for you if you are a potential candidate for surgery.

Why it’s done?

Rhinoplasty is done to change the size, or modify the proportions or shape of your nose.

  • It can be done for cosmetic reasons. The procedure helps change the appearance and shape of the nose.
  • It is mostly done for medical reasons. The procedure helps correct disfigurement resulting from birth defects or trauma or correct breathing problems related to the nose.

How it’s done?

Rhinoplasty is done through two ways – either from inside your nose or through an external incision at the base of your nose. Your surgeon will likely cut and readjust the bone, cartilage, and skin to modify the structure and shape of your nose.

The plastic surgeon can change the shape of your nasal bones in several ways, depending on factors such as your nose’s structure, how much needs to be removed, and outcome. For small changes, the surgeon usually takes cartilage taken from your ear or deeper inside your nose. For larger changes, the cartilage used is usually taken from your ribs or other soft bones of your body. If the wall (nasal septum) between the two sides of the nose has deviated (bent or crooked), the surgeon also cuts the crooked part to improve breathing. These changes may take 1 to 2 hours to complete. The surgeon places the nose’s tissues and skin back and does absorbable sutures to close the incision.

You will be in a recovery room after the surgery where the staff monitors your vitals and return to wakefulness.

How effective is Rhinoplasty?

Very slight changes – often measured in millimetres – to the structure of your nose can make a huge difference in the outcome of the surgery. Studies have shown that in more than 90% of the cases, an experienced plastic surgeon can get desired results.
